Karapatta Malasseri Bhagavathi Temple

History and Significance of the Temple

History of the Temple
The Karapatta Malassery Bhagavathi Temple is a sacred shrine nestled amidst picturesque hills in the Chamal area of Kattippara Panchayat, located in the Thamarassery Taluk of Kozhikode District in North Malabar. Believed to be over a thousand years old, this temple serves as a divine abode, embodying centuries of worship traditions and a diverse array of rituals.
In ancient times, worship and the maintenance of the temple were conducted under the leadership of *Uralans* (traditional temple trustees) and other administrators. It is believed that, centuries ago, a specific group of people performed worship here in accordance with *Uttama-karmavidhi* (the highest order of ritual practice). Over time, that lineage ceased to exist, and the maintenance of the temple came to a halt. Much later, worship was resumed through *Madhyama-karmānushthānas* (intermediate-level ritual practices) following *Shakteya-vidhi* (the *Shakta* tradition).

Reconstruction of the Temple
Around the 1980s, a committee comprising members of the public took charge of the temple and decided to reconstruct the temple complex, which had fallen into a state of disrepair due to age. As part of this initiative, construction work—including the *chuttambalam* (enclosing structure), *sreekovil* (sanctum sanctorum), and the outer boundary wall—was commenced.
However, numerous difficulties and challenges arose as the construction work progressed. Following this, after careful deliberation, a *swarnaprashnam* (a traditional form of astrological consultation using gold coins) was conducted. The outcome indicated that it would be inappropriate to install the existing *Bhagavathi* (deity) within the framework of the newly constructed temple; instead, it was advised that a temple or *kavu* (sacred grove) should be reconstructed, adhering to the original *kavu* concept.
Accordingly, land was purchased nearby, and a temple was constructed, enshrining the Goddess—conceived in the form of Bhadrakali—along with various subordinate deities (*upadevathas*).

The Presence of the Goddess in Two Distinct Manifestations

On May 21, 2004, the Goddess in the *Uttama-karma* (supreme/ideal) manifestation and the Goddess in the *Madhyama-karma* (intermediate) manifestation were consecrated separately.
In this era, devotees have been blessed with the rare opportunity to worship the Divine Power—who was venerated at this very site centuries ago through *Uttama-karmavidhi* (the highest order of ritual procedure) and later through *Madhyama-karmavidhi* (the intermediate order)—by consecrating Her under two distinct conceptual forms. Preserving the established tradition of worship, the presence of the Devi is now revered with deep devotion across both these conceptual manifestations.

The Divine Concept of the Goddess (Bhagavati)
This temple sanctum is blessed by the presence of Goddess Bhadrakali, who manifests in a formidable form. While she destroys the wicked, the Goddess also resides here as a benevolent, radiant figure—a bestower of refuge who showers blessings upon her devotees.

The Goddess is also worshipped under the names Krishnakali and Karinkali. Embodying both the fierce and the compassionate aspects of Divine Power (Shakti), this sacred abode serves as a sanctuary of faith and prayer for the devotees.
Concepts of Subordinate Deities

Within the precincts of the Bhadrakali temple, various divine entities and subordinate deities are consecrated and worshipped. The primary deities worshipped here include Guru, Malankurathiyamma, Kariyathan Daivam, Kuttichathan Daivam, Kelan Daivam, Perilan, Thalachilon, Gulikan, and Nagakali.
Key Concepts.

These concepts of the deity are an integral part of the temple’s unique ritual traditions and its rich heritage of faith.

The temple’s picturesque, natural surroundings
Nestled amidst mountain ranges of natural beauty, the temple complex features a temple pond and spacious grounds. This sacred space—where the tranquility of nature meets the sanctity of the Goddess’s presence—offers an ideal environment for devotees to engage in prayer and spiritual contemplation.
Devotion, Prayers, and Offerings

Devotees from various parts of the region arrive here to offer prayers, votive offerings, and their heartfelt aspirations in the divine presence of the Goddess, the Great Illusion (Mahamaya).
Devotees seek the blessings of the Goddess to overcome obstacles in areas such as marriage, education, and business, to be blessed with progeny, and to gain protection from enemies as well as from hardships caused by malevolent occult practices. This temple stands as a prominent place of worship for those who seek refuge in the Goddess with devotion and faith.

Annual Celebrations and Festivals
Various celebrations and festivals are conducted with great devotion at the temple throughout the year. The major celebrations include:

* Navaratri celebrations
* Tulapathu festival
* Sreekrishna Jayanti celebrations
* The sacred festival of the Goddess (Bhagavati) associated with *Uttamakarma*
* The grand *Thira* festival of the Goddess (Bhagavati) associated with *Madhyamakarma*
The *Thiru-utsavam* (sacred festival) of the Goddess associated with *Uttamakarmam* and the *Thira Mahotsavam* of the Goddess associated with *Madhyamakarmam* are the primary annual celebrations at the temple. These festivals are conducted with great grandeur every year from February 6th to 15th. Blending devotion to the Goddess with traditional ritual practices, these celebrations are enriched by the active participation of the devotees.
Conclusion

The Karapatta Malassery Bhagavathi Temple is a sacred site, blessed with a centuries-old tradition of worship, a divine presence manifested through two distinct conceptual forms, and unique ritualistic practices.

The temple serves as a spiritual sanctuary—a source of strength rooted in prayer and faith—for devotees who come seeking the blessings of the Adi Parashakti (the Primordial Supreme Power). One may seek the Goddess’s grace by offering prayers and *vazhipadus* (ritual offerings) with deep devotion in her sacred presence.
